Artificial intelligence (AI) has emerged as one of the technologies used increasingly by university students to aid their learning processes, but this does not seem to be applicable to the learning of third languages apart from English in Malaysia. This present research paper sought to investigate the perception of using artificial intelligence by university students in Malaysia as well as the challenges they face when using artificial intelligence tools to learn other foreign languages such as Mandarin and Arabic. Using a descriptive quantitative survey design, data were collected via an online questionnaire from 230 diploma students at Universiti Teknologi MARA (UiTM) and analysed using descriptive statistics in SPSS. Based on the analysis of the data collected from 230 diploma students undertaking Foundation of Mandarin and Foundation of Arabic, it was established that learners generally perceived artificial intelligence as helpful, enabling quick access to learning support via mobile devices. However, some disadvantages encountered by learners are caused by the inability to access the internet and slow network connections were perceived to arise from high costs of data usage and the lack of tools designed for third language learning. Based on these findings, the study proposes a preliminary AI-mediated third language learning pedagogical model, derived from the survey findings that positions AI as a supporting tool within instructional design and lecturer mediation. Overall, the findings point to the view that AI presents possibilities to strengthen third language learning and its proper use can be achieved through infrastructure, guided integration, and responsible learning practices.
