Steel slag is a waste material derived from the steel refining process. Over the years, the steel slag has gained its potential as sustainable alternative material as a partial cement and aggregate replacement in concrete industry. This paper examines chemical composition and the impact of adopting steel slag on the workability and mechanical properties of concrete. Physically, the steel slag is angular, rough, porous and dense. Such characteristic reduces the workability of fresh concrete. In order to produce optimized mix design using steel slag, water reducing admixture should be used to ensure that the workability of the mix fall within the acceptable workability. Mechanically, the use of steel slag improves the interfacial transition zone which improve the mechanical, flexural and tensile strength of concrete. Besides that, investigation of high-performance concrete reveals that steel slag improved the ductility and serviceability of concrete. In this paper, a comprehensive use of steel slag is being discussed with the aim for broader adoption is sustainable concrete technology. Overall, steel slag emerges as a promising material that balances enhanced structural performance with environmental sustainability.
